SUMMARY:Bluegrass Tuesdays with Fog Holler at the Showdown
DESCRIPTION:Fog Holler is a bluegrass band with an edge. What gives them that edge is a topic of hot debate. For some\, it’s musicianship – these bluegrass cats shred. For others\, it’s the songwriting\, traditional in style but topical in substance. Sometimes\, they undeniably snare people with the squad factor – folks see 4 grown adults in matching monochrome\, and they get curious. The secret\, according to Fog Holler\, is simply that they write and play bluegrass in 2024\, with similar intention but very different context from the genre’s originators. Inspired by a range of influences from The Stanley Brothers to Buck Owens to Meshuggah\, Fog Holler breathes fresh life into well worn forms like the murder ballad and the power waltz. Described by two-time Grammy Award Winner Cathy Fink as “The next generation of the many shades of grass”\, Fog Holler’s captivating tunes and coordinated outfits are quickly enthralling longtime bluegrass fans and newcomers alike. \nDoors 7pm / $10 / 21+

SUMMARY:Joe Newberry & April Verch at Reedwood Friends Church - Portland Folk Music Society Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Ever since Newberry & Verch met\, and discovered a musical spark that few can match\, they have toured across North America\, Europe\, and the U.K.\, including Nova Scotia’s signature festival Celtic Colours International Festival\, the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in New York state\, and Celtic Connections in Glasgow\, Scotland.  Their CD\, “Going Home\,” was released to wide acclaim in 2018.  In 2021 they released “On This Christmas Day\,” an album to accompany their annual Holiday Cheer Tours. \nWhether it is the power of two voices lifted in harmony\, or the sound of traditional tunes calling people to get up and move\, these two masters of tradition put on an unforgettable show. And\, when their feet kick up the dust in perfect rhythm and those two voices become one\, Joe Newberry and April Verch make folks remember why this music existed in the first place. \nConcert starts at 7:30 pm (doors open at 7:00 pm) \nLink for online tickets: \nhttps://portlandfolkmusic.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=748368&module_id=669183

SUMMARY:Cascadian Bluegrass Caravan featuring Fog Holler\, Quattlebaum & Billy Sheeley at Trout Lake Hall
DESCRIPTION:Fog Holler is a bluegrass band with an edge. What gives the band that edge is a topic of hot debate. \nQuattlebaum\, Southern Gent and Banjo Slinger\, brings more to the table than just music. With his infectious smile and weird antics\, he brings people together; encouraging camaraderie and building community. The singer-songwriter\, currently based in Bend\, Oregon\, tours the country picking and strumming indie-folk songs that are spacious and emotive\, and have an implicit groove. When he plays\, you can hear the reverberations of the rustic mountains clashing with the breezy ocean. Like a willowy heron\, Quattlebaum struts around on stage as the music moves through him\, evoking a range of emotions from laughter to longing. He shares tender moments\, where one can almost hear his banjo breathing\, then erupts into raucous peaks of unbridled energy—his captivating solo performances take his audiences on a ride. \nBilly Sheeley (of Greenneck Daredevils) grew up in Central Texas outside of Austin in the Hill Country. While attending college in Huntsville\, Texas he formed a band called The 19th & ½ St. band where he would make a name for himself as a singer songwriter in East Texas. After college Billy felt the need to leave Texas and find a new path on the West Coast. In 2008 Billy became a River Guide on the Rogue River serenading his clients around the campfire with John Prine\, Tom Petty\, and many other Texas Country artist. Billy now lives in Hood River\, Or as the frontman for The Greenneck Daredevils. A high energy foot stomping local band that has embedded itself in the Columbia River Gorge. Billy has a genuine style and charismatic display of Americana music that resonates with crowds. \n$15 Advance / $15 Day Of Show\n6pm Doors / 7pm Show\nAll Ages

SUMMARY:Josh Cole Band Bluegrass Matinee at the Laurelthirst
DESCRIPTION:Josh Cole has been playing bluegrass in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. It started in the late 90s\, when he first heard “Midnight Moonlight” from Old and In the Way. That moment forever bonded Josh to bluegrass music. He went on to serve as President of the Oregon Bluegrass Association and continues to host “Music From the True Vine” on KBOO-FM\, the longest running bluegrass show West of the Mississippi. \nJosh’s influences include Ralph Stanley\, Larry Sparks\, and Bill Monroe\, many of whom are featured on the Josh Cole Bluegrass Show\, his podcast with nearly 200 episodes of traditional bluegrass recordings. Josh has played in dozens of bands\, along with running his own hard-driving bluegrass band for nearly two decades. That’s why hometown fans have lovingly nicknamed him “The Elvis of Portland Bluegrass.”

SUMMARY:The Cascadian Bluegrass Caravan featuring Quattlebaum with the Muddy Souls and Dadweed
DESCRIPTION:Quattlebaum\, Southern Gent and Banjo Slinger\, brings more to the table than just music. \nThe Muddy Souls are a leading progressive bluegrass band based in Eugene\, OR featuring original songs\, virtuosic improvisation\, tight vocal harmonies\, and a high-octane groove that will energize and get the dance floor bouncing. Formed in 2018\, the band has four albums of completely original music\, and has played nearly 300 concerts across the Pacific Northwest\, Canada and the Northeast including festival sets at Freshgrass\, Bridge City Bluegrass\, Oregon Country Fair\, and Wintergrass. A gem of the Northwest music scene the Muddy Souls are sure to get your feet dancing and your face grinning. \nDadweed is a Pacific Northwest acoustic trio reimagining pickin’ and thumpin’ by blending elements of jazz/folk/soul/R&B within a traditional bluegrass lens. Showcasing three-part vocal harmonies and virtuosic instrumentation\, dadweed is redefining what’s possible in bluegrass. \n21+ / Doors 7 pm

SUMMARY:The County Fools at the Muddy Rudder
DESCRIPTION:If you were to bump into a member of the County Fools in the real world – walking the streets of Portland\, kicked back on a barstool\, or wandering in a hayfield – you might think to yourself “Hey\, these are some good timin’ guys. There’s not a serious thing about these fellas. They’re just foolin’ around!” But friend\, you’d soon come to realize that there is one thing that The Fools take very seriously: the great tradition of Bluegrass music. \nThe County Fools’ sound and sensibility is deeply rooted in that rich American dirt first tilled by the founders – folks like the Stanley Brothers\, Flatt and Scruggs\, and Bill Monroe – and further shaped by the great second generation of bluegrass musicians. Continuing this tradition with reverence and creativity\, and playing this music as it’s meant to be played\, is the spirit that guides the County Fools each time they step up to the mic.
