SUMMARY:Josh Cole Band and Thunder Ridge at the Multnomah Grange 71
DESCRIPTION:Josh Cole Band – Josh Cole has been playing bluegrass in the Pacific Northwest for over 25 years. It started in the late 90s\, when he first heard “Midnight Moonlight” from Old and In the Way. That moment forever bonded Josh to bluegrass music. Josh’s influences include Ralph Stanley\, Larry Sparks\, and Bill Monroe\, many of whom are featured on the Josh Cole Bluegrass Show\, his podcast with nearly 200 episodes of traditional bluegrass recordings. Josh has played in dozens of bands\, along with running his own hard-driving bluegrass band for nearly two decades. That’s why hometown fans have lovingly nicknamed him “The Elvis of Portland Bluegrass.” \nThunder Ridge – Thunder Ridge is a straight-ahead bluegrass band from Portland\, OR. The traditional five-piece band is made up of banjo\, guitar\, mandolin\, bass and fiddle. They will steal your heart with hard driving vocal harmonies and instrumentals. Allow them to take you down a path of yesteryear with a good old fashioned sound inspired by the masters of bluegrass\, and sprinkled with a few originals!

SUMMARY:Lonesome Ace Stringband
DESCRIPTION:Masters of their trade\, The Lonesome Ace Stringband bring grit\, skill and abandon to Americana music\, bridging old-time\, bluegrass and folk traditions into a seamless hybrid of original material that is at once fresh and timeless. \nThe trio’s sound is anchored in the fiddle and clawhammer banjo of John Showman and Chris Coole. They are joined by a rotating cast of extraordinary upright bassists (including founding member Max Malone\, James Mceleney\, and Lotus Wight). The band moves freely between a sound so commanding it doesn’t seem like it should be coming from a stringband\, to a sparse fragility that draws the listener closer. Whether singing about climate change\, modern love\, BBQ techniques or life’s inevitable existential crises\, the band cuts to the core. They can also turn and churn out a tune with so much verve that it will make your heart spin and set the dance floor swirling.

SUMMARY:Fog Holler at Fort George Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Fog Holler is a bluegrass band with an edge. What gives them that edge is a topic of hot debate. For some\, it’s musicianship – these bluegrass cats shred. For others\, it’s the songwriting\, traditional in style but topical in substance. Sometimes\, they undeniably snare people with the squad factor – folks see 4 grown adults in matching monochrome\, and they get curious. The secret\, according to Fog Holler\, is simply that they write and play bluegrass in 2024\, with similar intention but very different context from the genre’s originators. Inspired by a range of influences from The Stanley Brothers to Buck Owens to Meshuggah\, Fog Holler breathes fresh life into well worn forms like the murder ballad and the power waltz. Described by two-time Grammy Award Winner Cathy Fink as “The next generation of the many shades of grass”\, Fog Holler’s captivating tunes and coordinated outfits are quickly enthralling longtime bluegrass fans and newcomers alike.

SUMMARY:John Reischman and The Jaybirds at the Multnomah Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:The Jaybirds put their own particular stamp on bluegrass\, old time and acoustic roots music\, with a satisfying blend of traditional and modern styles. They also give the impression that they really enjoy playing together. There’s plenty here to please both bluegrass traditionalists and lovers of modern American folk music\, especially for those with an appreciation of great vocal harmony\, as well as masterful instrumental playing. Many of John’s dozens of original instrumentals have become popular favourites for sessions and covers\, such as the jam standard Saltspring. John has three critically-acclaimed solo instrumental albums and has recorded on many other projects\, including the Grammy-winning True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe. John also plays Latin-based jazz and choro music with highly regarded finger-style acoustic guitarist/composer John Miller; the duo has released three superb albums. \nPresented by the Oregon Bluegrass Association.
